While the Coupeville High School girls basketball team is aiming for its second consecutive Olympic League championship, senior Makana Stone is reaching several milestones of her own.
Stone, a four-year starter, surpassed 1,000 points and 200 steels in her career when the Wolves defeated visiting Chimacum 48-34 Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Coupeville lifted its league record to 5-0 (11-4 overall) and opened a three-game lead with four games left in the race for the conference title. The Wolves also clinched one of the Olympic League’s three playoff berths with the win.
Port Townsend (2-3, 5-10) and Klahowya (2-3, 3-12) are tied for second in the conference, one game ahead of Chimacum (1-4, 4-12).
The Wolves travel to Silverdale Friday, Jan. 29, for a 3:30 p.m. game with Klahowya.
Stone entered Tuesday’s game needing 22 points to reach 1,000 and four steals to hit 200. She easily passed both benchmarks, scoring 28 points and nabbing seven steals. Earlier this season she eclipsed 800 rebounds; she now has 847 after grabbing 16 Tuesday.
Stone wasted little time in her quest to top 1,000 points, scoring the game’s first six; two of the hoops came from assists from Mia Littlejohn.
Stone also had the quarter’s final points and the Wolves led 11-7.
With a 16-0 run, Coupeville built a 25-7 lead and went into the locker room up 29-14.
At the 2:25 mark of the third quarter, Stone sank a free throw for her 1,000th point. The Wolves finished the period ahead 40-25.
Chimacum scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to get within 10, but Stone scored four points, Kailey Kellner two and Skyler Lawrence two to put the game away.
“I feel like we came out focused and with energy tonight,” coach David King said. “Makana set the tone early and often in the first.”
The energy, however, caused some problems at the defensive end, King said, as the aggressive Wolves got into early foul trouble.
Turnovers (the Wolves had 28) were also a concern, King added.
Rebounding wasn’t as the Wolves won the battle of the boards 46-21.
Littlejohn collected eight rebounds, Kellner seven, Lindsey Roberts six, Tiffany Briscoe four and Lauren Grove four.
Littlejohn added eight points, Kellner six, Roberts two, Lawrence two and Kyla Briscoe two.
Littlejohn also had four assists and Kellner three. Roberts collected four steals.
“We realize that the other three teams are coming for us every game,” King said. “That means we have to be at the top of our game; tonight we did that. We did a lot of things well tonight.”
