Last summer, Lisa Esperum, an Oak Harbor High School senior, volunteered in the Oak Harbor’s engineering department.

Her work was significant enough that someone nominated her for the President’s Volunteer Award, which she recently received.

“I believe I was nominated for it because of my volunteer service with the city,” Esperum said. However, her volunteerism goes beyond the city.

Esperum has been active in Key Club at the high school. She’s helped with fund-raisers benefiting victims of December’s tsunamis, Christmas Food Drive and the High on Life Fun Night.

In addition to her high school activities, she served food to the homeless and volunteered at the Tropic Lightning Museum in Hawaii.

The award was created to recognize people’s service over a 12-month period. Esperum received a certificate and a congratulatory note from President George W. Bush.

Esperum is preparing for college next fall and hopes to major in business.
