The Coupeville High School girls basketball team hit more hoops in the fourth quarter than the first three combined, but the late burst wasn’t enough as the Wolves lost 45-41 to visiting Sultan Monday, Jan. 9.

Trailing 30-20 heading into the final quarter, Coupeville forced seven Sultan turnovers, controlled the boards and put up 23 shots to the Turks’ four, but couldn’t claw all the way back.

Sultan (2-4, 4-7) sank three of those four shots and hit nine of 12 free throws to hold off the Wolves.

Prior to the last quarter, Coupeville shot only 20 percent (8-for-40) and finished the game at 27 percent. The Turks shot 30 percent (15-for-50) for the game.

The Wolves led 9-8 after the first quarter as Sultan stayed in the game early by pulling down 10 first-period offensive rebounds.

Helped by an 8-0 run, the Turks led 19-15 at halftime.

Coupeville was in foul trouble early and starting center Bessie Walstad sat half the game. Jai’Lysa Hoskins and Katie Smith also missed chunks of the contest as the Wolves committed 21 fouls to Sultan’s 11. The result was a nine-point advantage at the line for the Turks, who made 14 of 21 to Coupeville’s 5-for-10.

Hoskins paced Coupeville with 12 points, eight coming in the fourth-quarter surge. Cassidi Rosenkrance scored nine, Smith six, Haley Marx six, Lauren Escalle three, Taya Boonstra two, Walstad two and Hailey Hammer one.

Coach Jackie Bykonen said, “Haley Marx played really well. She had not played many minutes lately and made smart passes, rebounded well and scored six points.”

Sultan’s starting senior post Dani Markwood continued her run of big games against Coupeville with 14 points and 15 rebounds.

The Wolves (0-6, 1-9) travel twice this week, going to Lakewood (0-6, 0-12) Wednesday, Jan. 11, and then to Cedarcrest (4-2,, 8-4) Friday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m.
