A detective with the Island County Sheriff’s Office released an image today of a man suspected of burglarizing a roadside coffee stand owned by a county official.

Detective Ed Wallace said the break-in at Prairie Perks was reported by an employee who showed up for work at 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The drive-through stand is located just outside of Coupeville town limits on Terry Road. The burglar broke windows on the drive-through and the door, then left the door standing open, Wallace said.

Mary Engle, the county assessor and owner of the coffee stand, said the burglar made a big mess of broken glass, but didn’t get away with much beyond a stainless steel can of X-Plosion drink mixer. The intruder also nibbled on some cookies.

The break-in didn’t stop the coffee from flowing.

“It was a big mess and an unwanted expense for us, but not a huge deal,” she said, adding that they boarded up the windows and went back to work.

Wallace retrieved video from the security camera from the espresso stop. He said it appears to show the burglar.

Wallace said the suspected burglar is a white male, about 17 to 21 years old, and dressed in a hooded sweatshirt. He cautioned that the description is still “very preliminary.”

The Ebey Bowl, which is next to the coffee stand, was broken into last summer. In that case, footage from a security camera led detectives to the suspects.
