A Coupeville man was sent to the hospital for injuries he sustained in a one-car accident on Highway 20 late Wednesday evening.

According to the Washington State Patrol, the accident took place at about 9 p.m. just west of Sherman Road. Jon Vidoni, 64, was southbound in a 2000 Ford Econoline van and passing the cow crater on the south side of the highway when he lost control and drove off the embankment.

The vehicle struck the bottom of the hill and then did at least one “flip,” end-over-end, before coming to a rest on its roof and facing the opposite direction, said Sgt. Bruce Maier of the state patrol.

Emergency responders were on the scene quickly and Vidoni was transported to Whidbey General Hospital. Maier said his injuries appeared to be minor.

“Bumps and bruises,” he said.

An unidentified juvenile, whose relationship to Vidoni is unclear, was also in the van but the individual was not injured in the crash. Both were reportedly wearing seat belts.

According to Maier, Vidoni was traveling at a “high rate of speed” and lost control when he had to brake to avoid a vehicle in front of him.

A press memo Thursday morning cited speed as the cause of accident. It also said Vidoni is facing charges of driving under the influence, reckless driving and reckless endangerment.

The accident resulted in both lanes of traffic being shut down for about 30 minutes. The southbound lane remained closed for another 45 minutes until a tow truck arrived and removed the wrecked van.
