The Coupeville Maritime Heritage Foundation is hosting a celebration to welcome back the historic schooner Suva for its second season in Penn Cove on Friday.

The celebration will take place from 1-7 p.m. at the Coupeville Wharf, beginning with Mayor Molly Hughes participating in a dockside ribbon cutting to officially open Suva’s 2016 sailing season.

Festivities from 1-5 p.m. will include dockside tours of the 91-year-old, 68-foot-long, Gatsby-era schooner, nautical knot tying demonstrations and a chance to meet the captains and crew.

From 5-7 p.m., festivities will continue on the back patio of the wharf, featuring live music, appetizers and drinks. The Salty Mug also will be staying open until 7 p.m.

The Suva returned home to Penn Cove in 2015. It spent the winter at the Oak Harbor Marina.

Former Coupeville resident Frank Pratt Jr. had the yacht built in 1925. It’s made of old-growth teak.

Last spring, Coupeville’s Mark Saia led fundraising efforts to purchase the boat from a Port Townsend man and return it to its home waters in Penn Cove.

In the process, the Coupeville Maritime Heritage Foundation was formed as a nonprofit to take ownership of Suva.

Last summer, tours and sailings took place from the Coupeville Wharf on a donation basis.
