An Oak Harbor High School student died of a gunshot wound following a shooting in Oak Harbor Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
The Oak Harbor Police Department stated that around 1:07 p.m. Aug. 30, officers responded to a call about an erratically driven vehicle. Another call shortly after indicated that the vehicle seemed to have been involved in a collision.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered a passenger in the vehicle had been shot. The driver told police he was taking the wounded passenger, a 15-year-old boy, to the hospital from the location where the shooting reportedly took place.
Responders transported the victim to WhidbeyHealth, where he died from his wounds.
A school district representative confirmed that the boy was a student at Oak Harbor High School. An email from the school district to Oak Harbor families stated that the district is providing additional mental health and grief counseling services for students and staff.
“As our community grieves for the loss of a young life, our thoughts remain with the family, friends, students, staff and others impacted by this event,” the email said.
