Chalk up another one.
The Oak Harbor girls tennis team won their fifth consecutive match 7-0 over Mount Vernon Monday afternoon, after losing their first two matches of the season.
“We’re feeling pretty good right now,” head coach Horace Mells said.
In blustery cold conditions, the Cats handled the Bulldogs, a program that is in a rebuilding process, with ease.
“We’ve had some practices in conditions similar to that so that helped us,” Mells said.
Number one singles player Maggie Manucal won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 over Trina Anderson of Mount Vernon. The win moved Manucal’s record to 6-1 on the season, with her only loss coming in her first match of the year against Liz Currey of Stanwood.
Number two singles player Heather Jewell also continued to roll, winning her sixth match of the season, 6-2, 6-1.
Junior Kari Goebel filled in for undefeated number three player Lareese Santos, who missed Monday’s match due to illness and won 6-4, 6-2 in two sets. Athena Epilepsia rounded out the singles wins for Oak Harbor, shutting out her opponent 6-0, 6-0.
On the doubles side, Oak Harbor continued to dominate. The duo of Kara Merriman and Hazel Sapida picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Michelle Leibrand and Chelsea Lorenz, while Soley Wilson and Joan Gailo also gathered a win at the number two doubles spot.
In the only match that went three sets, Kristi Goebel and Daisy Jordan bounced back strong after losing their first set to claim Oak Harbor’s seventh victory on the day.
The Wildcats played Monroe yesterday to complete their first round of WesCo North competition. After taking a week off, the Cats will get a chance to redeem themselves against the only two teams to beat them this season, Stanwood and Snohomish.
“We’re going to play our best against those two teams and see what happens,” Mells said.
Oak Harbor plays at Stanwood, Thursday, April 17 and returns home for a match against Snohomish at 3:45 p.m., Tuesday, April 22.
“Things are going as expected,” Mells said. “We just need to stay focused.”
