The Tesoro Corporation announced the Anacortes refinery will temporarily halt crude oil processing until the area affected by the deadly April 2 fire is restored, officials announced in a press release Monday afternoon.

The short-term shut down will occur later this month. No Anacortes employees will be laid of as a result of the closure.

The fire killed five refinery employees and seriously injured two others. One of the dead and one of the injured were from Oak Harbor.

Since the incident, the refinery primarily produced unfinished products that cannot be upgraded until the damaged units are restored or an alternate plan is created, according to the release.

Officials are unsure when normal operation will resume. Full service won’t be restored until the incident investigations are complete and repairs made.

Despite the reduction in refinery operation, Tesoro officials expect to meet its customers’ needs through its other refineries in Hawaii, Alaska, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Salt Lake City.
