A 14-0 run to open the second half of action left Coupeville girls basketball coach Blake Severns scratching his head wondering what happened.

The Wolves played a good first half in Friday evening’s Cascade Conference game against Sultan and trailed by just five points, 23-18 at the break.

However, things went south in the Wolf Den. Coupeville was held scoreless until the 1:14 mark of the third quarter as the Turks took a 37-18 lead, and rolled to a 51-37 Cascade Conference victory.

The Turks improved to 2-1 in the Cascade Conference and 4-5 overall. Coupeville fell to 0-5 in league games and 3-8 overall.

“I really don’t know what we were doing wrong in the third quarter or what we were doing differently,” Severns said.

Coupeville came out playing tough defense early in the game that resulted in the score being tied five times in the first quarter. Sultan then had two huge shots late in the period when Shelby Brink hit a long two-point basket and Summer Hassler hit a three-point bomb that gave the Turks a 12-7 lead after the first eight minutes.

The two teams played head-to-head in the second quarter with each team scoring 11 points.

Severns said Sultan runs a lot of different stuff at you on defense and that makes them a difficult team to contend with.

“We’re a young team so we’re still learning to adjust on the fly, he said. “We really started to figure things out as the game went on.”

Megan Smith scored 13 points and had nine rebounds for Coupeville. Katie Smith had nine points, seven of those coming in the final nine minutes of the game, including a 5-for-6 effort from the free throw line. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Bianca O’Hara scored a game-high 15 points for Sultan, including three from 3-point range. Alicia Korn and Cassie Beucherie added 12 points each.
