As if 3,000 pounds of pork isn’t enough, chef Scott Fraser is adding one more gigantic oinker to the Pigfest celebration.
He’s purchased a two-story tall inflatable pink pig to bring attention to the summertime festival, which is part eat-fest and part barbecue competition.
He hasn’t named the giant pig yet, but the inflatable made an appearance at the Holland Happening parade over the weekend. And she’ll be popping up other places, too.
She might show up in some unexpected places.
“I want the pig to be an ambassador,” said the mustachioed Fraser, who owns Frasers Gourmet Hideaway in downtown Oak Harbor.
Who doesn’t like a gigantic inflatable pig?
This year Pigfest is scheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 14. It’s the ninth year of the festival, which Fraser founded as a “thank you” to the community. The event happens with the help of donations. Last year, nearly $20,000 was raised for charity.
People can nosh on a barbecue lunch or take in the entertainment. This year there will be games, vaudeville acts and clowns, a climbing wall, arts and crafts vendors and — if you’re still hungry — a hot dog and pie-eating contest.
The event also is a Pacific Northwest Barbecue Association competition and Fraser is hoping Miss Giant Piggy will bring not only more festival-goers but also more barbecuers to Oak Harbor. Twenty-five teams from Canada and the Northwest will compete in pork butt, pork ribs, chicken and brisket categories.
