Shortly after 7 a.m. on Monday a three car accident brought traffic to a standstill at the intersection of Whidbey Avenue and Oak Harbor Street.

The Oak Harbor Police and Fire Departments closed the intersection and diverted westbound Whidbey Avenue traffic through the Saar’s Market parking lot.

Eyewitness Sarah Brown, who was on her way to work, said the accident appeared to occur when a Toyota Sienna, headed eastward on Whidbey Avenue, ran the red light.

The Sienna, driven by Leslie Ehlert, hit a silver Chevy Aveo, driven by Melinda Sison, who was traveling north on Oak Harbor Street, said Sgt. Larry Ferguson of the Oak Harbor Police Department.

“It spun around a couple of times,” Brown said of the Chevy. “A couple seconds later and that could have been me.”

Brown was traveling south on Oak Harbor Street and was waiting to turn left onto Whidbey Avenue.

A Dodge Ram truck driven by Leonard Roberts was also involved in the accident, according to Ferguson. Roberts, who was also traveling north on Oak Harbor Street behind Sison, clipped the Aveo as it spun around in the intersection, he said.

“It’s the biggest debris field for a car accident that I’ve seen at that intersection,” Ferguson said.

Fault has not been determined, he said, and the accident is still under investigation.

There were no major injuries as a result of the accident. The three drivers were treated on scene and released.
