The weekend of March 20 broke clear and sunny on the Puget Sound as 14 adventurous students ventured out for a three-day, two-night sailing excursion.
Middle and high school students from North, Central and South Whidbey sailed aboard the Cutty Sark, a 52-foot ketch owned by Captain John Colby Stone of Aeolian Adventures.
“Along the way the youth learned how to navigate, sail and plot our course,” said Markell Egelston Potts.
The trip began from Cornet Bay Friday morning to Jones Island, where the crew unloaded the Cutty Sark and set up camp for the weekend.
Saturday afternoon the crew tried to get some sailing time in, but with little to no wind to fill the sails, most of the day was spent under power.
“Our evenings on the island consisted of beach combing, exploring, capture the flag, and sitting around the campfire with our captain, as he shared his stories of the islands and how they were named, all while enjoying s’mores and popcorn,” said Potts.
The crew voyaged home Sunday back to Cornet Bay State Park where parents were anxiously awaiting to hear about the weekend.
The trip was donated by Bob Drennan of Albertson’s.
“Without the volunteers and donations from others, this trip would not be possible,” Potts said.
