That’s two days the Coupeville High School softball team would like to forget.

Tuesday, April 23, second-place Lakewood blanked the host Wolves 11-0 in five innings, then Wednesday first-place Cedarcrest took two from visiting Coupeville 12-4 and 9-2.

The Wolves (4-9, 5-9), after facing the Cascade Conference’s best two teams, meet someone from the other end of the standings when they travel to last-place South Whidbey (1-12) at 4 p.m. Monday, April 29.

Lakewood’s Haily Malakowski continued her mastery over Coupeville, picking up her third pitching win over the Wolves this year and hitting her third home run.

Coupeville co-coach David King said Malakowski “had a good fastball along with a very good change up.”

He added, “The change up kept us off balance and leaning on the pitches.”

The Wolves managed only three hits, a double by McKayla Bailey and singles by Madi Roberts and Sydney Aparicio.

In the first game with Cedarcrest, the Wolves scored four runs in the second inning to overcome a three-run first (two by home runs) by the Red Wolves, but couldn’t push across any more runs. Cedarcrest used a six-run sixth to put the game away.

Hailey Hammer started the four-run second for Coupeville with a walk. Bessie Walstad singled, and after two outs, singles by Haley Sherman, Aparicio and Roberts produced the four runs.

After the rough first inning, starter Bailey settled down as the two teams entered the fifth tied at 4.

An error allowed Cedarcrest to go up 6-4 in the bottom of the fifth.

Cedarcrest erupted for eight hits in the six-run sixth to secure the win.

King said, “Our hitting was better but lacked urgency and intensity on defense.”

Walstad collected three hits, while Roberts, Hammer, Sherman and Aparicio had a single each.

Left fielder Sherman provided the defensive highlight by robbing Kailyn Campbell of a home run.

Coupeville scored first in the second game, getting a run in the third on singles Roberts, Bree Messner and Maria Rockwell.

It didn’t take long for Cedarcrest to respond, pushing across five runs in the bottom half. The Red Wolves mixed five singles with a hit batter, walk, passed ball, error and fielder’s choice for the five-spot.

Coupeville wasted excellent scoring opportunities over the next two innings, then the Red Wolves scored three in the fifth on a Campbell home run to make it 8-1.

The Wolves scored one in the sixth when Bailey smacked her second home run of the season.

King said, “The whole team picked it up and played hard and we made plays we didn’t in the first game. Both games Cedarcrest had a good inning swinging the bats and we just got into a hole we couldn’t climb out of.”

Messner finished 4-for-4, Roberts had two singles and Bailey homered. Rockwell, Hammer, Walstad and Madeline Strasburg each singled.
