Limiting Vashon Island to only one point in each of the first and fourth quarters, the Oak Harbor High School girls basketball team thrashed the Pirates 42-13 Monday, Dec. 28, in the Bulldog Holiday Classic in Mount Vernon.
With the help of five points from Bryn Langrock, Oak Harbor zipped to an 11-1 lead in the first quarter and continually pulled away for the easy win.
The 1A Pirates hit only one of four free throws in the first quarter and one of six in the fourth as they struggled to score all afternoon.
Vashon Island (3-7) picked up most of its points in the second quarter when it scored eight, but Oak Harbor doubled the effort behind five points from Deja Bunch and led 27-9 at the break.
Seven of the eight Wildcats who suited up scored, led by Langrock with 12. Bunch was next with 11, and Julie Jansen added seven.
Matti Miesle and Janae Payne each scored four points, while Resego Mooki and AnnaBelle Whitefoot had two each.
“We were able to get in our press which resulted in some turnovers,” coach Jon Atkins said. “We also did a really good job of contesting shots.”
The big win carried Oak Harbor (4-4) into the championship game with Mount Vernon (3-4) at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29. The Bulldogs drubbed Marysville-Pilchuck 60-33 to reach the finals.
