Town of Coupeville officials have yet to make a firm decision on how to deal with a small landslide on Front Street, but action may be taken next month.

Plans to deal with the small slide, which has closed off part of the walking trail along Front Street, were put on hold late last year and into 2014 as officials dealt with changes to the Marshal’s Office.

While an official decision has yet to be made, Mayor Nancy Conard said the council is leaning toward her proposal of turning that portion of Front Street into a one-way road.

Conard said she expects a proposal to go before council on May 27.

“We’re trying to fast track this,” Conard said. “We’d like to get it done by Fourth of July.”

The project would consist of creating the one-way road, moving the pedestrian walkway farther in and repairing the area where the slide occurred.

“We’re going to meet with a couple of businesses close to that part of the road and the residents along there and bring their input back to council,” Conard said.

Town officials first noticed the eroding bluff between North Kinney and North Gould streets in early January 2013.

So much of the bluff has fallen that a section of gravel sidewalk is lower than the surrounding area and there are cracks along the path.

That portion of sidewalk has been fenced off for more than a year.

While the plan doesn’t include immediately dealing with future erosion issues, Conard has said the town will deal with erosion as it happens and that studies conducted on the slide show it isn’t fast-moving.
