Coupeville Town Council gave town staff directives to redraft its ordinance about the prohibition of smoking in town-owned facilities to include vaping.
In 2014, the council approved Ordinance 714, which prohibits the use of tobacco products in town parks and trails. That ordinance includes the vaping method.
However, town code currently doesn’t specify vaping as prohibited in town-owned buildings such as town hall or the Town Rec Hall.
Mayor Molly Hughes said the interpretation of Senate Bill 6328 varies.
“Someone could come into this meeting and vape away,” she said.
Council asked staff to work on revising town code to include vaping.
“Anything we could do to encourage people not to do it is a healthy thing,” said Councilwoman Catherine Ballay.
