The Town of Coupeville is asking for an extension on its comprehensive plan update.
While Island County and the city of Oak Harbor have been working on the amendment process for many months, Coupeville planners were slated to begin work on the project last month. The plan is due in June.
Town Planner Tammy Baraconi said towns that fit a certain criteria can qualify for a two-year extension. The criteria includes communities with fewer than 5,000 people, and towns that fall below a specific growth rate.
Coupeville’s 1.7-percent average annual growth rate also fits into the requirements, Baraconi said.
The town is looking into the availability of grants to help with the comprehensive plan update process, said Town Clerk Treasurer Kelly Beech.
If the extension is granted, the town can apply for funds to help cover the cost of items like informational materials for public distribution.
Updating the comprehensive plan is a long process, involving public input and involvement.
