Two candidates stepped forward to vie for a seat on the Port of Coupeville Board of Commissioners during a special filing period earlier this month.
Coupeville residents Bradley Duncan and Marianne Burr both filed Aug. 7 for the District 1 position on the board.
A longtime Whidbey resident and commissioner for the Crockett Lake Water District, Burr said she has been faithfully attending Port of Coupeville public meetings since 1997 and wants to help the port “carefully consider the financial costs of new ideas as well as the possible benefits” while caring for the properties it already owns.
Duncan is a relative newcomer to Whidbey seeking to become more involved in the community. A lawyer of 35 years, Duncan said he believes his skillset could be valuable to the port district as he seeks to “ensure the long-term financial viability of the port.”
The incumbent, David Day, decided not to seek reelection, and no one filed for the position during the regular filing period.
The Island County Elections Office held the special three-day filing period for residents to file in special purpose districts without current candidates.
Two Clinton residents also came forward to run for Position 2 on the Clinton Water District Board of Commissioners. Jill Engstrom filed Aug. 7, and Michael Turnbull filed Aug. 8.
Several positions remain unfilled. No one came forward during the special filing period to run for three open positions on the North Whidbey Water District Board of Commissioners or two open positions on the Scatchet Head Sewer District Board of Commissioners.
