Two dramatic accidents occurred on Highway 20, but no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Thursday evening, one driver was transported to the hospital following a four-vehicle accident near Oak Harbor.
The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. March 17 on Highway 20. North Whidbey Fire and Rescue Captain Chris Geiger described the incident as a “high-speed, cross-over, head-on accident.”
Geiger, the incident commander, said when he arrived at the scene of the accident, the four involved vehicles were spread over a 400 foot distance between Harns Road and Lombardy Lane.
One of the drivers was trapped behind the wheel and dashboard of her vehicle, which had sustained serious damage to the front end, and was screaming in pain when responders arrived, Geiger said. Firefighters had to extricate her from the car using heavy tools, and she was subsequently taken to WhidbeyHealth Hospital by ambulance.
No other vehicles’ occupants reported any injuries.
Then on Friday afternoon, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue firefighters responded to a driver who nearly rolled his car into Penn Cove.
The incident took place around 2 p.m. March 18 on Highway 20 between Zylstra Road and Power Road. The vehicle veered from the road and rolled down a 20-foot embankment, coming to a rest on the beach.
Geiger said the driver was already out of the car but was complaining of pain when responders arrived. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Responders carried the driver from the scene in a Stokes basket, and he was taken to the hospital.
Information on the accidents’ causes was not available by press time.
