Two Whidbey Island residents have been charged with robbing and assaulting a man they met at a Clinton bar May 14.

Prosecutors charged Shawn Blanton, a 25-year-old Clinton resident, in Island County Superior Court May 18 with robbery in the first degree, assault in the second degree and theft in the second degree.

The other suspect, 26-year-old Casey McDonald of Greenbank, was charged with the same counts May 26.

The two men could face significant time in prison if convicted of the charges.

Sgt. Jeff Myers with the Island County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a strong arm robbery in Clinton in the early morning hours of May 14. He found that the victim was shirtless and had a swollen eye, abrasions on his back, an injury to his lip and a broken tooth, Myers wrote in the statement of probable cause.

The man said he had met two other men, later identified as Blanton and McDonald, at a bar and went to an apartment with them. The three men decided to walk to another house “to party,” the report states.

As the three men walked down “a long dark alley,” McDonald allegedly struck the man from behind and knocked him down, Myers wrote. McDonald and Blanton started kicking and hitting him, the report indicates.

The man said he tried to get away, but ended up giving the men his wallet. But the two suspects returned shortly after finding the wallet empty and demanded money, the report states. The man handed over $300 in cash from his pocket.

Island County Superior Court Judge Alan Hancock ordered that Blanton and McDonald be held in lieu of $10,000 bail. Blanton was out on bail May 21.
