North Whidbey Fire and Rescue Fire and Washington State Parks responded Wednesday evening to a report of two kayakers in distress under the Deception Pass Bridge.
At about 6:40 p.m., a Washington State Parks boat made initial contact with the kayakers and confirmed that they needed to be rescued because of the extreme water conditions.
The fire department’s Marine 21 and Marine 25 reached the two kayakers and brought them aboard the rescue boat. Marine 21 transported both kayakers to Cornet Bay Marina, where they were evaluated by medical personnel and released without injury, according to a press release.
At the time of the incident, the water conditions were turbulent with a seven-knot current on an outgoing tide that created several eddies making waters difficult to navigate by kayakers.
A total of 12 public safety personnel responded to the rescue call from the following agencies: North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, Washington State Parks, Washington State Patrol and Island County Sheriffs.
