United Way of Island County has kicked off its 2012 Campaign with the goal of raising $350,000 in a time when demand for its agencies’ services is increasing.
“Over 85 percent of all dollars raised is granted to the 11 partner agencies and 14 programs and services that the agencies provide to residents of Island County,” said Cathy Niiro, executive director of the organization.
Bill Weinsheimer, board president, and a team of dedicated volunteers are responsible for this year’s fundraising effort, which will support education, income and health service programs throughout Island County.
Weinsheimer’s commitment and dedication comes through with his words of wisdom and encouragement, “Helping our people every day is the United Way.”
“I’m very excited to serve as the board president,” said Weinsheimer. “I have been a volunteer and donor to United Way for many years and know first-hand how important the campaign is for the continuation of local programs and services.”
“The local agencies funded by the annual campaign make such a big difference in the lives of the people in our community,” Weinsheimer continued. “In recent years, the grant requests have increased dramatically from all of our partner agencies, showing a 55 percent increase because of local, state and federal funding cuts.”
Weinsheimer said the agencies are showing a 15 percent increase in the number of people needing assistance.
“Due to these facts, basic needs in our county are on the rise, and your support is needed more than ever,” he said. “I know that together, with hard work, commitment, and dedication we can continue to support all of our friends in Island County.”
Now that the campaign is officially in progress, local businesses have begun registration for employee awareness programs in the work place. The United Way of Island County staff and volunteers provide the material and message to the employees.
