An Oak Harbor pedestrian is on the mend this week after being hit by two vehicles last week.

According to Oak Harbor Police Chief Rick Wallace, the accident occurred at about 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, on Regatta Drive near the intersection of Highway 20. Although some details are still unclear, Wallace said William Lamson, 20, was in the process of refueling a vehicle that was out of gas when he was struck by a southbound motorcycle.

The driver of the 2002 Yamaha YZFR motorcycle has been identified as John Newell, 22, of Oak Harbor.

Wallace said it’s unclear whether Lamson was standing in the street or was on the road shoulder when he was hit. However, once he landed he was then struck by a second vehicle traveling northbound.

“At that point he was run over,” Wallace said.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 2000 Subaru four-door Legacy, has been identified as Ryan Wright, 21, also of Oak Harbor.

Lamson was rushed to Whidbey General Hospital and was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center. Wallace said he was told that morning that he was listed in critical condition. Hospital officials confirmed Monday, however, that Lamson was released in satisfactory condition Sunday afternoon.

The driver of the motorcycle, Newell, was also injured and was transported to Whidbey General Hospital. Spokeswoman Trish Rose confirmed that Newell was treated and released Thursday evening.

While there has been some speculation that Lamson was dressed in dark clothing and was crossing the street when he was struck, Wallace said those were not facts he could not confirm or deny. However, he advised the public to always wear light or reflective clothing or carry a flashlight while walking along dark streets.

Wallace said an investigation is under way but that there is no indication that reckless driving, speed or alcohol were factors in the accident.

He confirmed that Regatta Drive had to be closed for several hours that evening and the following morning.
