The COVID-19 variant known at the U.K. strain has been found in Island County, public health officials announced Thursday.

The local case is one of 19 positive cases identified in Washington state thus far, Island County Public Health said in a press release.

Although the variant has been shown to be more transmissible, there are no additional public health precautions beyond what is done for any COVID-19 case, according to the release.

The public is asked to continue to wear a mask, keep gatherings small, avoid indoor social gatherings, wash hands often, stay at home if sick and get tested for COVID-19 if symptoms arise.

The press release did not specify if the person who tested positive for the variant lived on Whidbey or on Camano.

There have been 1,269 cases of COVID-19 in Island County and 25 deaths as of Thursday evening. Whidbey has accounted for 972 cases and 22 of the deaths.

Island County moved to Phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan last week which allows restaurants to operate with 25 percent capacity through 11 p.m. Indoor fitness centers and live entertainment venues can also open with 25 percent capacity.
