Veryl Ann McWilliams went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 22, 2012, after a long illness.
Born to Manny Jacobs and Flora Plato on Sept. 13, 1924. Ann, as she was commonly known, was born in San Francisco, Calif., where she spent most of her early years. She, her mother and sister, Jackie, then moved to Vallejo where she finally met her husband, Alan McWilliams at the Vallejo Roller Rink Club. They loved to dance skate. Alan’s brother Chuck used to love to do dangerous twirls with Ann. She would lock her ankles around his neck and he would start spinning. As a skater she earned three skating medals.
Alan and Ann became husband and wife on June 26, 1947. It wasn’t an easy wedding. They first had to find a church in Oakland, Calif. They went in and asked the Pastor to marry them. His response was a “No” for their requirement was they must go thru weeks of training first. Al explained that he just wanted a simple wedding, so the next place they went was to a Justice of the Peace at 11 p.m. In San Pablo, Calif. Their honeymoon was spent at Jacks Shack in San Pablo. They were married 65 years. From there Ann and Al spent their early years as a couple in southern Calif. Such as Hawthorne, Redondo Beach, and Torrance.
Missing family they moved back to Northern Calif. Where they settled until retirement before moving to Oak Harbor.
Ann worked at various jobs. Her last being in Atomic Energy Nuclear Medicine in San Jose, Calif. She was an executive secretary to 19 scientists.
Both Ann and Al served in various positions in their churches. Ann was a member and officer in Christian Women’s Club, We Care Committee, Stephen Ministries, and Hospice, all in Wash. In Calif., for many years she served in Prison Ministry as well as holding positions at “Shepherds Gate,” a home for battered women in Livermore..
Ann is survived by her husband, Alan McWilliams of Oak Harbor; All other survivors are from Calif. including sister, Jacqueline McNeill; son, Jerry Magnus; daughter, Peggy Gipson (Art) Livingston; two grandchildren, Michele Brodie (Stewart) of Farmington, and Dawna Gipson of Modesto; nine great-grandchildren, Cherisse and Desmond Cano of Modesto, Brenna Brodie of Farmington, Austin and Justin Silveria of Wash., Travis Brodie of Farmington, Tyler Abell of Modesto, Ashley Vance (Steven) of Stockton, and Anthony Brodie of Stockton; and one great great-granddaughter, Gizelle Mendez.
Ann was lovingly and graciously attended to in her last weeks here on earth by Emanuel Medical Center Hospice, a nonprofit organization. Their care of Ann was so wonderful.
