A Feb. 10 assault in Oak Harbor left a man with a broken ankle and bleeding in his brain, according to court documents.

The alleged assailant, Jacob S. Jungwirth, 29, is facing a second-degree assault charge for allegedly hitting the man and third-degree assault charges for attacking a deputy, according to court records.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges in Island County Superior Court Feb. 17.

The 58-year-old victim said he was standing outside and talking to a man he didn’t know, later identified as Jungwirth, at a mobile home park. The victim said Jungwirth became aggressive for no apparent reason, according to a police report.

Jungwirth asked him if he said something and then punched him, according to the police report.

The alleged victim said he didn’t realize what had happened to him and initially refused medical help. He later was driven to the hospital, where doctors found that his ankle was broken and there was bleeding in his brain; he was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment, the report said.

About an hour after the assault, a deputy responded to a report of a man, identified as Jungwirth, chasing two other men on Ault Field Road.

Jungwirth attacked one of the men in front of the deputy and ignored commands to stop; he pushed the deputy and resisted arrest until he was tased, according to the deputy’s report.
