Vietnam Memorial replica coming to Oak Harbor

“Honoring America’s Heroes” opens July 24

A replica of Washington, D.C.’s, Vietnam Memorial, “American Veterans’ Traveling Tribute,” will be on display at Oak Harbor’s City Beach Park July 27 through 30. The memorial will be the feature of a weeklong tribute called “Honoring America’s Heroes.”

The tribute is being spearheaded by the PBY Memorial Association with support from groups and businesses including the local Fire Fighters Association, Oak Harbor VFW Post, American Legion, Boys and Girls Club, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Coachman Inn, the city of Oak Harbor and Whidbey Island Naval Air Station.

Ceremonies will be held July 27 honoring the Marine Corps, July 28 honoring the Army, Air Force and Coast Guard, July 29 honoring firefighters and law enforcement, and July 30 honoring the Navy.

“Since we are not having an air show in Oak Harbor this year, we felt this event would give us the opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to those who are serving and all of those who have served our nation in peace and at war,” Howard Thomas, PBY Memorial Association vice president and event co-chair said.

The Traveling Tribute wall is approximately 400 feet long and has more than 58,000 names. The wall will be on display 24 hours a day. Visitors may also “Vietnam Remembered,” and exhibition of paintings by area artist and Vietnam veteran Norm Bergsma.

A computer will be set up to assist relatives, friends and veterans locate names on the wall. The computer also provides information about where the military people served, when they died and the cause of their deaths.

Brief ceremonies will be held daily at noon. The Navy Band Northwest will provide music as part of the ceremony on Friday, July 30.
