One of the six kitchens to be viewed at the upcoming American Association of University Women’s Whidbey Island Dream Kitchen Tour Saturday, Aug. 27, is Gaye and George Rolstad’s English cottage in Langley.

Their 2009 remodel converted a Cape Cod home into an authentic reproduction of a late-1700s English cottage. Visitors to the house are transported back to the English countryside as it was 300 years ago.

The kitchen is built around a pine settle table, also known as a bench tale, from Pennsylvania that dates to back 1740. A rare burl hand-painted and grained bowl from 1800s New England sits on the table. The chairs are upholstered with Pierre Deux, which is also used in the window treatment. A hanging corner 1860s cupboard displays part of Gaye’s collection of old English ironstone.

The countertops are salvaged granite from Lloyd Whannell, Fine Art Builders and recycled maple chopping block from Architectural Woods of Tacoma, honed and finished by George. Pine planks are found throughout the house and were set using hand forged nails.
