Visitors welcomed on South Whidbey

North Whidbey’s WOW (Whidbey On Wheels) Wagon at Deception Pass State Park will be duplicated on South Whidbey.

The Island County Commissioners on Monday approved an agreement to allow the Langley South Whidbey Chamber of Commerce to use county-owned property at the intersection of Langley Road and Highway 525, next to a gas station.

Loretta Martin, chamber manager, said the site “could be a good southern bookend to the WOW tourism information trailer that the Oak Harbor Chamber places at the Deception Pass Bridge parking lot each summer.”

She said she got the idea about two years ago, and has since been working to obtain state and county permission to use their roadside property for a small tourist information booth and kiosk. The state Department of Transportation has already signed off on the proposal.

Martin said the kiosk will be manned by volunteers during the summer and perhaps on major event weekends. Year-round visitor centers will continue to operate in Langley and Freeland.

Plans for the kiosk have already been drawn up by Tom Felvey, a retired architect and co-owner of the Country Cottages Bed and Breakfast, and small grants have been received from the Island County Lodging Tax Committee and the Whidbey Island Garden Tour, with more money expected to come from the Langley South Whidbey Chamber and the Freeland Chamber.

“The two chambers will form a joint committee to fund and oversee the operations of the Whidbey Island tourist information booth,” Martin said. Plans are to have it open for summer 2006.

The lease agreement with Island County is for five years with the possibility of renewal, as long as the property is not needed for transportation purposes by the county or the state.
