Approving the bid for a new stadium isn’t the only decision the Oak Harbor School Board made Monday night.
The board also approved a name for the stadium along with concepts for a memorial that will be built out front.
The structure that will replace old War Memorial Stadium will be known as Wildcat Memorial Stadium. That was the name that came out of a community group that spent the past several months kicking around naming ideas.
“We took on many different choices of names and discussed it for weeks,†said Jim Slowik, committee member.
Along with the name is a memorial to honor the five military services that will include a bell tower, an arched entry with supporting columns and a wrought iron fence.
Preliminary estimates show it would cost approximately $100,000 to pay for the memorial part of the stadium project. Volunteers already have a start on raising money. The Rotary Club pledged $10,000, the Booster Club pledged $10,000 and the high school ASB pledged $15,000.
As work on the new stadium begins, changes are in store for old War Memorial Stadium which saw its last football season this year. It will be renamed Veterans Field. How it will be used remains a question mark.
“That’s one of our additional questions we have to answer,†Superintendent Rick Schulte said Tuesday. There hasn’t been a decision yet about the field’s future. Discussions will begin sometime after the start of the new year. Schulte wants to see if there are any community groups willing to partner with the school district to improve the dilapidated field that still means a lot to many folks in town.
