Ebey the Scarecrow will be popping up all over town throughout the month of October for a new promotion sponsored by the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce and the Whidbey Examiner.

Ebey the Scarecrow will be popping up all over town throughout the month of October for a new promotion sponsored by the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce and the Whidbey Examiner.

The historically inclined plywood scarecrow will hide out in nine different locations. Those who find him in each of his secret places might take home a prize.

He will take his first post Wednesday, Oct. 1 and move to his second location late Saturday, Oct. 4. From then on, he will change locations every Wednesday and Sunday.

When you find him, take a picture with him and post it to the Examiner Facebook page or the chamber’s Facebook. Entries may also be emailed to editor@whidbeyexaminer.com or director@coupevillechamber.com

One entry per person per location. Photos submitted may be subject to use for promotional purposes.

Clues to Ebey’s whereabouts will be provided weekly in the Whidbey Examiner, chamber and Examiner websites, as well as Facebook pages.

The clues to Ebey’s first two locations will be revealed Wednesday, Oct. 1.

This is a fun way to get people out and about and promote local attractions and businesses, said Lynda Eccles, executive director of the chamber.

Volunteers are hard at work getting Ebey prepared for his big reveal.

Artists tried to depict him as accurately as possible from historical photos of Colonel Issac Ebey, the first white settler on Whidbey who famously met his death at the hands of angry Native Americans. He lost his head in the fateful encounter, but his likeness is intact.

The Where’s Ebey contest kicks off a month of Halloween and harvest-related activities.
