Lights shining on South Whidbey

nClinton resident Jerry Back’s Christmas lights are up and ready for visitors. The light show goes from 6 – 9 p.m. at his home located at 6504 Robin Lane off Highway 525. Visitors can see a Nativity scene, a family of snowmen and scenes of children playing. Beck estimates he uses 2.45 megawatts of electricity to power the display.

Camano pushing incorporation

Camano Island residents are undertaking a feasibility study to incorporate. “This is really about local control, getting people on Camano to have a bit more say on what happens at home,” Camano Island resident James McCafferty, who is part of the group working toward incorporation.

People needed for Polar plunge

Deadline is approaching for brave or possibly fool hearty folks wishing to brave the chilly waters of Double Bluff Beach during the Polar Bear Plunge that takes place at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 1. The $15 event fee includes a T-shirt and hot drinks. Proceeds benefit the Island County Four-H Teen Ambassador program. For information, email jgabelein@comcast.net

Porter ends term on commission

Jim Porter will wrap up nearly three decades of service on the South Whidbey Parks and Recreation Commission. He will finish his tenure with a meeting starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17

Langley loses public works director

After three months on the job, Langley Public Works Director Maria Cablao submitted her resignation citing personal and professional reasons. New director Stan Berryman takes over in January and he will earn $70,273 a year.

Coupeville schools get new numbers

Thanks to a technology levy, the Coupeville School District installed a new telephone system. The district spent approximately $25,000 for the equipment, which will allow people to contact teachers directly without having to go through a switchboard. It also includes enhanced 911 that gives operators the caller’s address and classroom number. Coupeville’s new phone system is identical to the Oak Harbor schools, which manages information services in both districts.

Santa Mobile visits C. Whidbey

Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue’s Santa Mobile will visit neighborhoods throughout the district. Santa will ride atop a fire engine through the neighborhoods and firefighters will be available to answer questions about the district’s programs.
