Clinton bookstore shutters doors
Clinton-based Anchor Books and Coffee will serve its last cup of coffee Dec. 30. Owners Bruce and Trish Didier have tried to sell the business for the past several months, but they weren’t successful.
Langley welcomes animation studio
Animators Drew Christie, Amanda Moore and Dane Herforth opened Kalakal Co., which is a combination studio and store operating out of the former home of the South Whidbey Record. Christie’s work has been featured by the New York Times, Sundance Film Festival and he’s won awards at the New York Children’s Festival and the Ashland Independent Film Festival.
Youth donates clothes to mission
Four-year-old Weston John Hill spent a month collecting winter clothing for homeless children. The South Whidbey resident collected jackets, gloves, scarves and caps that were donated to the Everett Gospel Mission.
Greenbank agent earns award
Greenbank resident Barb Schwarz was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Seattle King County Association of Realtors. Schwarz is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the home staging industry and she has been educating people on the subject since the early 1970s.
Superstructure heads to Seattle
Employees at Freeland’s Nichols Brothers Boat Builders finished the superstructure for Washington State Ferries latest 144-car vessel. The new superstructure will be transported to Vigor Industrial in Seattle where it will be attached to the ferry’s hull. The first Olympic Class ferry, named the Tokitae, will start service in summer of 2014.
Larson wins athletic challenge
Greenbank resident Jessica Larson won the Island Athletic Club’s 2013 Fall Fitness Challenge. Larson, 29, lost 21.4 pounds during the eight-week fitness. She also shed 5.8 percentage points of body fat.
Whidbey wine tapped as best
The merlot produced by Whidbey Island Winery was recently recognized by a Seattle-based blogger. The wine topped the “Top Forty Under Twenty Bucks” list produced by Stan the Wine Man blog for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Van crashes, damages cars
A van crashed into two cars in downtown Langley Dec. 20. The driver of the van wasn’t injured. The driver was pulling out of the post office parking lot when she lost control and crashed.The cause of the crash was unknown according to the Langley police.
Cold weather damages fields
Cold temperatures were responsible for damaging the fields at a sports complex on South Whidbey. Parks officials asked teams to stop using the fields whenever cold weather comes.
