In 2023, couples in search of rural charm might consider a wedding at the Whidbey Island Fairgrounds.

The fairgrounds’ Pole Barn Auditorium recently received a makeover. Built in 1937, the cavernous auditorium has capacity for 250 seated guests.

Improvements to the building’s interior aren’t the only updates that have been happening at the fairgrounds, which have been owned by the Port of South Whidbey since 2017.

Although the annual Whidbey Island Fair is probably the most well-known and widely attended event happening on the grounds, plenty goes on when it’s not fair time.

Year-round renters of the other buildings include OutCast Productions, Vibrant Fitness and Bekah Bee Music. The pole barn’s commercial kitchen is bustling with activity, especially since a three-phase power converter was added in December for hooking up to commercial machinery.

Marketing and Event Coordinator David Stern explained that a new lounge space has been created. A dining room off the pole barn has been transformed into the cozy gathering spot, which is ideal for 30 guests, such as a recent staff party for employees of a Langley business. The room is also equipped with decorations such as an antique bingo machine, which lends a touch of whimsy.

In addition, the port hopes to revitalize the Pole Barn Auditorium, which is an ideal place for weddings.

Stern said summer concerts and a weekend-long music festival event are forthcoming.

“We’re building slow with our local community first, making sure everyone is served and getting everything they need out of the fairgrounds,” he said.

The port is also currently working on establishing an online reservation system for the nearby campground. On Feb. 13, renovation of the 4-H restrooms began.
