Wildcats, Huffer off to good start | Swimming

The Oak Harbor swim team and Emily Huffer both made splashy 2012 debuts Monday, Sept. 10, with a 113-57 win over Edmonds-Woodway at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

The Oak Harbor swim team and Emily Huffer both made splashy 2012 debuts Monday, Sept. 10, with a 113-57 win over Edmonds-Woodway at John Vanderzicht Memorial Pool.

The Wildcats won nine of 12 events in the season opener, and Huffer, in her first high-school meet, earned three state-qualifying times while winning four events.

Huffer achieved state marks in the 50 freestyle (27.7),  100 backstroke (1:07.27) and the 200 medley relay (2:20.47) along with Akasha Trisler, Lauren Vagt and Irysh Concepcion.

Huffer, Trisler, Vagt and Marissa Morris captured the 400 free relay (4:26.79).

Morris, too, was a four-time winner, also taking the 400 free (5:00.32), 200 free (2:21.65) and 200 free relay (2:07.07) with Concepcion, Vagt and Mariel Empinado.

Concepcion added a first in the 100 free (1:07.74), and Trisler won the 100 breaststroke (1:21.5).

Coach Amy Merkley said, “We are off to a good start, looking strong.”

She likes her team’s depth and said it should help the Wildcats be a contender for the division title.

Next the Wildcats go to Marysville-Pilchuck along with Marysville Getchell at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13.
