Qualifying five athletes for the state meet, the Oak Harbor High School swim and dive team placed third in the 12-team District 1 meet at the Snohomish Aquatic Center Saturday, Nov. 7.
Senior Marissa Morris and sophomores Jillian Pape and Taliah Black qualified for state in individual events, and sophomore Baelee Whitinger and junior Erica Sugatan joined the trio on a pair of qualifying relay teams.
The top four finishers in each event at district earned berths in the state meet, which is Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13 and 14, at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.
Morris will be making her fourth trip to state, while Pape, Black and Sugatan will return for the second time.
Glacier Peak, the only 3A team to defeat Oak Harbor during the regular season, won the district team title with 387 points. Shorewood claimed second with 343.5 points, and Oak Harbor edged Marysville-Pilchuck for third, 263.5-263.
Pape earned Oak Harbor’s only district title, winning the 50-yard freestyle (24.87) after swimming third in the preliminaries. She added a fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.1).
Morris had her string of three consecutive 200 free district titles broken when she placed second (2:02.46). She was also second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.24).
Black was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.41) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:24.22).
Oak Harbor was second in two relays.
Whitinger, Black, Pape and Sugatan teamed up for second in the 200 medley relay; while Morris, Black, Sugatan and Pape placed second in the 200 free relay (1:46.1).
