Wildcats sweep Lions

Oak Harbor swimming coach Erika Miller said the victory over Lynden on Wednesday, Dec. 20, was a big “morale booster” for the team.

The Wildcat boys dominated every aspect of the meet, won every event, and captured a resounding 132-38 victory over the young Lions squad.

In most of the events the Wildcats swept, finishing first, second and third.

The 200-meter medley relay of Chris Klieman, John Hu, Cameron Spence and Spencer Livermore got things off swimmingly, winning the event in a time of 2:04.51. And then the domination began.

Oak Harbor swept the first three places in the next two events, the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-meter individual medley, and then finished first, third and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle.

The Wildcats followed with sweeps in the 100-meter butterfly and the 500-meter freestyle, and finished first and third in the 100-meter freestyle.

“This was a fun meet for us,” Miller said. “It makes them feel good to win a meet like this. We didn’t get any state times today, but we had a couple of swimmers come close. John Hu was just eight seconds off in the 500-meter freestyle from setting his fourth state qualifying time.”

After finishing first and second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, Oak Harbor swept the 100-meter backstroke event, finished first, third and fourth in the 100-meter breaststroke, and closed the meet out with first and second-place finishes in the 400-meter freestyle relay.

Oak Harbor had three swimmers earn four first-place finishes, including Spence in the 200-meter medley relay, the 100-meter butterfly, the 100-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter freestyle relay.

Klieman finished first in the 100-meter freestyle, the 100-meter backstroke and as a member of the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle relay teams.

Hu won the 200-meter freestyle in addition to the 500-meter freestyle, and was also a member of the winning 200-meter relay teams.

“I think I will be able to get a state time in the 500-meter freestyle if I work hard and listen to my coaches,” he said.

Livermore had three first-place finishes as a member of the relay teams and also in the 200-meter individual medley.

“I got the time I wanted in the individual medley, but I’ve gone faster before,” he said. “I’ve been sick, so I’m just happy to win.”

Daniel Saiku said he was also happy with his second-place finishing time of 2:44.92 in the 200-meter individual medley.

“I didn’t swim as well as I could have, but I’m happy,” he said. “I pulled almost an all-nighter last night because I had an essay due. I’m really tired, actually.”

Bryce Vagt won the 50-meter freestyle and teamed with Brian Silvera, Chris Rankin and Cory Blyther to win the 400-meter freestyle relay in a time of 4:50.48.

Kilsman Aquino, a foreign exchange student from Brazil, is improving with every meet and earned a second-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle. He was also a member of the second-place teams in the 200 and 400-meter freestyle relay events.

“I can do better, but I did pretty well today,” Aquino said.

Oak Harbor returns to action after the Christmas break, hosting Ferndale in a 3 p.m. meet on Jan. 2.
