The Oak Harbor girls tennis team got out their brooms against a pair of league opponents this week.
Everybody won in the Wildcats’ 7-0 sweeps of Arlington on Friday and Monroe at home on Monday. With the two wins the Cats improved to 9-1 on the year and stayed one win behind the league-leading Snohomish Panthers.
“We’ll we’ve lost one match so far,” said Wildcats head coach Horace Mells. “We still have to play Stanwood – they’re a good team and it should be a pretty good match.”
Leading the way for the Wildcats was No. 1 singles player Theresa Black, who remained unbeaten on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Arlington’s Lindsey Webb and a 6-0, 6-0 win against Monroe’s Morgan Neal-Tape.
“Theresa’s playing very well,” said Mells. “She will have a tough match against the No. 1 from Stanwood who is undefeated up to this point as well.”
In singles play, Maggie Manucal, Kelly Linder and Rachel Cichowski picked up two victories apiece. On the doubles side, Mells continued mixing and matching his pairings, looking for the right combinations. It seemed to work as the doubles pairs dropped just one set over the course of the two contests.
“We’re doing good in singles,” he said. “We need to get the doubles teams going, but if we can win two out of three (doubles matches) we’re doing a good job.”
The Cats face Snohomish today in a match that will go a long way to decide the Wesco North Division crown. If Oak Harbor can get past the Panthers they will each have one league loss with it coming against each other. On Friday they host Lake Stevens.
