Wildcats top Ferndale 13-7 for 1st win | Softball

After scoring only three runs in its first two games, the Oak Harbor High School softball team tallied four in the first inning to ignite a 13-7 win at Ferndale Tuesday, March 22.

The victory was the first for new varsity coach Tashina Tosh.

The Wildcats took advantage of Ferndale starter Sydney Rondell’s wildness to jump to the fast start.

Alexa Findley walked, Shea Davis was hit by a pitch and Kelly Findley walked to load the bases. Another walk to Audrey Howard forced in one run, then Tricia Sarns’ ground out scored another. Liz Adams followed with a two-run single.

The Golden Eagles (0-4) used two hits and two errors to score three runs in the second inning.

Oak Harbor made it 7-3 with three runs in the third. Sarns singled and stole second. With two outs, Sam Payne knocked in Sarns with a single and later scored on Alexa Findley’s hit.

Halle Carpenter reached on an error in the fourth and Payne tripled her home to make it 8-3.

Two errors and a double helped Ferndale cut the gap to 8-6 in the bottom of the fourth.

Oak Harbor pulled away with five runs over the next two innings.

In the fifth, Alexa Findley singled, was bunted to second by Davis and then scored on Howard’s single.

Four runs in the sixth completed the Wildcats’ scoring.

Payne and Lyndsay Duchnowski walked, and Alex Findley singled in one run. With two outs, Kelly Findley doubled in two runs and then scored on an error.

Alexa Findley went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.

Adams and Payne each had two hits and two RBI.

In all, the Wildcats pounded out 10 hits and received 11 walks.

Sarns pitched a five-hitter for the Wildcats, striking out eight, walking none and allowing no earned runs.

“My girls came to play and left everything out on the field,” Tosh said. “They showed that they were prepared and focused. Lexie and Kelly had great leadership and helped to keep the team alive and lead them to their first win.”

Oak Harbor (1-2) kicks off conference play when Everett (3-0) visits at 4 p.m. Friday, March 25.
