There was no way Oak Harbor sophomore Evan Wilson was going to miss the 4A state swim meet over the weekend — not even a bout with pneumonia could stop him.

“He’s a tough kid,” OHHS head coach Erika Miller said.

Battling illness, Wilson swam to 16th place overall in the 200 individual medley finals in a time of 2 minutes, 6.95 seconds. The time was 1.5 seconds off his personal best, but it was good enough to score a point for the Wildcats.

OHHS junior Brian Hall, the only other individual swimmer competing in Federal Way on Friday, finished in 22nd place in the 50 freestyle at a time of 23.34. A top 16 place was required to move on to Saturday.

Oak Harbor’s 200 free relay team of Wilson, Hall, Russell Chesnut and Cameron Spence also took 22nd overall, finishing at 1:36.37.

“We were seeded in last, so we scooted up a little bit,” Miller said. “That was their goal — they said ‘we just don’t want to finish in last.’”

The top 24 individuals and relay teams from around the state were competing in each of the 12 events.

The Wildcats earned one point on the day, via Wilson’s gutty effort, and finished in 47th place.

Although they didn’t do as well as she had hoped, Miller was pleased to have athletes at the state meet.

“It was nice to just be there,” she said. “There were a lot of schools that didn’t have teams competing at all.”

Decatur High School of Federal Way won the meet with 190 points. The highest WesCo North finisher was Snohomish in sixth place with 120 points.
