After reviewing this year’s results from the 2010 “Most Miles in May” contest, one thing is obvious: locals like or, in some cases, love to bike.

Oak Harbor Environmental Educator Maribeth Crandell recently announced the winners for the 2010 “Most Miles in May” bike contest. This year men took the top three spots.

Geology professor Ward Bebee of Oak Harbor was awarded first place for biking 721 miles. Bebee enjoys long-distance cycling. Last year he rode from Bremerton to Westport and back in 15 hours, logging 255 miles.

Island County Recycling and Hazardous Waste Manager Jerry Mingo of Port Townsend took second place with 627 miles. He commutes to Coupeville via bike and ferry about four days a week. Most of his May miles were clocked from doing loops on the Quimper Peninsula.

In third place was Coupeville attorney Charles Arndt with 605 miles. Arndt often makes Sunday jaunts up Mount Erie enjoying the steep, windy workout and the views. He thinks any distance under a mile should be done on a bike and encourages people to get out of their cars. The men were offered prizes like free registration for the Tour de Whidbey and Bicycles Northwest gift certificates.
