Wolf boys find success in league

The Coupeville boys basketball team’s difficult non-league schedule, resulting in a 1-7 record, may have done more good than bad for the Wolves.

The Coupeville boys basketball team’s difficult non-league schedule, resulting in a 1-7 record, may have done more good than bad for the Wolves.

The tough non-league opponents have prepared the Wolves, who are now 2-0 in the Northwest A league and are looking like they can compete for a top spot.

“It’s an anybody beat anybody kind of league,” head coach Randy King said.

Tuesday night, Coupeville got its second league victory of the season, 69-51 over the Concrete Lions.

Through the first half it appeared the game would remain tightly contested, with the Wolves taking a 29-27 advantage into the locker room. Hot first half shooting by seniors Brad Sherman and Brian Fakkema resulted in 21 of Coupeville’s 29 first half points.

In the third quarter the Wolves came out a team possessed. Fakkema knocked down a three-point shot in the first ten seconds of the half and the Wolves never looked back.

The quarter was capped by a hard-nosed play from Sherman. With a defender running at him on a three-point attempt, he hit the shot after being plowed over. He went on to complete the rare four-point play.

The Wolves put the game out of reach with their continued hot free-throw shooting. The team shot 17 for 21 making them 39-43 in two consecutive games.

Fakkema finished the contest the leading scorer with 24 points.

“He’s been doing very well,” King said. “He’s been shooting a real nice jump shot.”

Sherman had 20 followed by senior Casey Clark with 12.

The Wolves lost their second game the following night 65-50 to non-league Overlake.

Despite taking a seven point lead at the half, Coupeville could not muster any offense in the second half, scoring four points in the third quarter and nine in the fourth.

“Our shooting ability went south,” King said.

The free throw shooting that had been so effective the previous night was non-existent for the Wolves, who only took five attempts for the game.

Next for Coupeville is league-leading LaConner at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday Jan. 14 at home.
