Wolf pack thumps Sultan

Wolves notch first league win

A motivated bunch of Coupeville volleyball players took the floor for Tuesday’s match against Sultan.

Coming off losses to South Whidbey and Granite Falls, an 0-2 league record is almost unheard of with the success the Lady Wolves have enjoyed over the past several seasons.

Responding to a pre-match pep talk from coach Toni Crebbin, the team pulled things together and soundly defeated the Lady Turks in three games.

“We talked before the match and I told them we were 0-2. There was no way we were going home 0-3,” Crebbin said. “We got our first league win and the monkey is off our backs.”

In the first game the Lady Wolves came out strong thanks to some great play at the net by seniors Sarah Burgoyne and Leah

Mouw, defeating Sultan 25-13.

“We got our first win in the league thought we did really good,” and I Burgoyne said. “The last couple of games we played really bad, but this was a good win for us.”

A senior standing 6 feet, Burgoyne had an intimidating presence at the net the entire match and many times frustrated the Lady Turks’ offensive attack.

In the second game, the Lady Wolves roared out to a 5-0 lead and appeared to have the game in hand.

However, the Wolf pack made some floor mistakes and allowed the Lady Turks to rebound and take an 11-10 lead.

The score went back and forth before being tied 15-15, but that was the last time Sultan would have a chance.

Holding a 17-16 advantage, Krysten Huddleston served the game out for a 25-16 victory.

“The girls are proud of what we did. We could have played better but we got the win, that’s all that counts,” senior outside hitter Corrine Gaddis said.

Sultan tallied the first two points of the third game before Huddleston served eight straight for Coupeville and the Lady Wolves never looked back, cruising to a 25-14 victory to claim the match.

Huddleston paced Coupeville with six kills, nine digs and six aces, and Gaddis had nine digs and three kills.

Kayla Lawson had eight assists and Mouw had six kills.

Crebbin said the girls kept the intensity level up in the match.

“We ran around a lot, that was a good thing to see. If we pick up our game and continue on with what we did tonight, we should do pretty well the rest of the season.” she said.
