After blanking visiting Archbishop Murphy 5-0 Tuesday for its fourth consecutive win, the Coupeville High School tennis team ran into trouble Wednesday, losing to visiting South Whidbey 5-0.

The Wolves steamrolled its first four foes this spring, surrendering only one point along the way. South Whidbey (5-0), also undefeated heading into the match, provided to be a different animal.

Coupeville’s previously undefeated singles players Amanda d’Almeida and Allie Hanigan failed to win a set against the Falcons’ Newman sisters, Hayley and Carlie.

The Wolves top two doubles teams also struggled: Iris Rychaert and Holly Craggs lost to Tess Radisch and Amelia Weeks 6-1, 6-1; and Ana and Ivy Luvera were blanked by Hannah Calderwood and Isla Dubendorf.

Coupeville’s third doubles duo, Micky LeVine and Jacki Ginnings, playing in their first varsity match, put up a fight. They won the first set 6-4 before dropping the next two 6-2 to Breanna Gauger and Sophie Nilsen.

Coupeville coach Ken Stange said LeVine and Ginnings “played their heart out.”

Against Archbishop Murphy, d’Almeida (8-2) and Hanigan (8-1) made quick work of the Wildcats’ singles players.

Rychaert and Craggs won 8-0, the Luveras 8-4 and Breanna Koym and Samantha Martin 8-6.

Stange said, “It was a pretty easy day for most of the girls. The singles players cruised. Ana and Ivy got off to a slow start, but they found their way back quickly to take the match. Samantha made her varsity debut and won with Breanna.”

Coupeville (4-1) entertains Blaine (2-3) at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, March 28.
