The Port Townsend High School softball team hasn’t won a game in nearly two years, and Coupeville added to the Redhawks’ misery by thumping the visitors 19-4 in five innings Thursday, March 31.
The Wolves lifted their season record to 6-1 with the win in the Olympic League opener for both schools. PT fell to 0-4.
“Hits were the theme today,” coach Kevin McGranahan said, and the bats were booming from the beginning.
The Wolves tallied five times in the first inning with the help of a triple by Sarah Wright and doubles by Katrina McGranahan and Jae LeVine.
In the third inning, Coupeville put the game away with 10 runs behind triples by Mikayla Elfrank and LeVine and a double by Kailey Kellner.
The four-run fourth inning was highlighted by Hope Lodell’s inside-the-park home run.
Coach McGranahan split the pitching duties between his daughter, Katrina, and Wright. Katrina McGranahan worked the first, third and fourth innings, facing only 10 batters and striking out six. Wright made her debut in the circle and tossed the second and fifth innings.
Hannah Benway-Weirich also debuted, starting in the outfield and playing her first varsity innings.
“She gained valuable experience today and did well for never playing softball before this season,” Kevin McGranahan said.
“Another team win,” McGranahan said. “The girls are gelling faster than we expected. I can’t be more proud.”
The Wolves are off until 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, when they go to Lynden Christian. The Lyncs are 4-0 with wins over three 2A schools, including handing 8-1 Sehome their only loss.
