How do you know a team put forth an all-around effort?

For Coupeville football coach Ron Bagby, the answer was simple on Friday night.

Five different Wolves broke into the end zone and a number of players stepped up on defense as CHS cruised to a 34-14 road victory over league opponent Concrete.

“I thought we put together a pretty good game,” Bagby said. “We spread the ball around really well…”

The Wolves, who have now won two in a row, jumped out to an advantage in the first quarter and never let go.

Junior running back Trevor Tucker put CHS on the scoreboard on its first possession, breaking into the end zone on a pitch from 36 yards out.

On Coupeville’s next drive senior J.J. Marti got loose on a 73-yard run up the middle, helping the Wolves to the 14-0 lead they held until halftime.

CHS continued to roll from there.

On their first drive of the second half they worked the ball down the field, eventually completing a 7-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mike Bagby to junior tight end Tony Prosser.

Concrete managed one long drive capped off by a touchdown after the Coupeville score, but other than that was unable to get its offense moving.

“Defensively we just stopped them,” coach Bagby said.

The Lions had just 162 yards total offense, most of which they picked up late in the contest.

CHS was led defensively by senior defensive end Ryan Hickman and Prosser at linebacker. Both players had seven tackles apiece.

The Wolves tacked on two more touchdowns, scoring on a 5-yard run from Mike Bagby and a 15-yard run from junior Casey Larson.

As a team Coupeville had 296 yards on the ground and was 7-for-11 passing for 82 yards.

“It’s not a lot of yards passing, but it was efficient,” coach Bagby said.

Coupeville improved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the Northwest 1A/B.

The Wolves have a home game for the first time in nearly a month at 6 p.m. this Friday, Sept. 30 against the number-two ranked team in the state Friday Harbor (4-0). In their four wins the Wolverines have outscored their opponents 181-13.

Bagby knows this week’s game will be no easy task, but with the way his team has played lately he is optimistic.

“This will be a true test,” he said. “I think we have a lot of momentum coming in off our two wins – it should be a good game.”
