Wolves end 11-game skid

Marti rushes for 159 yards and three touchdowns en route to 31-13 win

It’s finally over.

Coupeville head football coach Ron Bagby was able to breath a deep sigh of relief Friday night, as the Wolves broke an 11-game losing streak dating back to Sept. 5, 2003.

“Oh gosh, it’s been a while,” Bagby said. “We’ve been close in some games, but we just haven’t been able to get it done.”

The Wolves got it done in a large way Friday, defeating non-league Tacoma Baptist 31-13 at Mickey Clark Field.

Tied 7-7 at the half, Coupeville took control in the third quarter.

“The second half we really came out and dominated,” Bagby said.

Running back J.J. Marti was key to the second-half success. The junior, who rushed for 159 yards on 27 carries, gave the Wolves the lead for good with 9:13 to go in the third on a 15-yard touchdown run. Less than five minutes later, Marti added another score, this time from seven yards out.

“J.J. ran really hard and our line blocked really well,” Bagby said.

Marti tacked on a third score late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Aside from a strong offensive performance in the second-half, Bagby credits the play of the special teams.

Andrew Mouw highlighted the kicking game, going a perfect 4-for-4 on extra point attempts, while adding 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. On Coupeville’s three punts, they were able to pin Tacoma Baptist deep every time.

“Our special teams was maybe the difference,” Bagby said. “We had field position most of the game.”

Coupeville took the initial lead of the game, scoring on their first play from scrimmage, a 55-yard pass from quarterback Mike Bagby to wide receiver Bryan Sherman.

Bagby was 12-for-17 on pass attempts for 189 yards.

Tacoma Baptist countered with a 55-yard touchdown pass of its own from Adam Gruenier to Jeff Gudiatis with 10:37 to go in the first quarter, but it was all the scoring they were able to generate until late in the fourth quarter.

Coupeville’s defense laid down the clamps at key moments — in particular on fourth-down goal line stands in the second and third quarters.

“We bent a little bit, but we didn’t give up the key plays,” Bagby said.

Marti led the Wolves in tackles with 16. Andrew Moon had 10 tackles, while Tom Watson, playing in his first football game ever, had seven tackles and a tipped pass that led to an interception.

The Wolves, now 1-2 in non-league play, start Northwest A/B competition this Friday at 7:30 p.m., at home against Concrete.

The Lions (1-2), previously ranked among the top 10 class A schools in the state, have lost their last two non-league games coming into Friday’s contest.

“They’re solid all the way around, but it is a team that we match up pretty well with,” Bagby said.
