After losing five straight matches, the Coupeville High School tennis team reversed course and picked up two wins this week.

First, the Wolves dumped visiting Granite Falls 4-1 Tuesday, April 29, after losing to the Tigers 4-3 six days before.

Then Coupeville trimmed Lakewood 3-2 at home Wednesday, April 30.

Coach Ken Stange said “things hadn’t been clicking,” so he reshuffled his lineup for Granite Falls (3-4, 3-9).

One of the changes, pairing Sydney Aparicio and Wynter Thorne in second doubles, paid off with a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Stange said the pair played “the best tennis of their lives.”

“They hit harder, they were more accurate and they went for each and every ball,” he added. “It was inspiring tennis.”

Stange named the pair the Player of the Match.

Allie Hanigan raised her season record to 7-3 with a 6-2, 6-2 win in first singles.

Jacki Ginnings got “back on track,” Stange said, with a 6-2, 6-1 win in second singles.

Valen Trujillo and Sydney Autio won their third consecutive match, taking third doubles 6-0, 6-4.

Samantha Martin and McKenzie Bailey lost 6-2, 6-0 in first doubles.

“All eight of the varsity players played at a higher level than they did last week,” Stange said. “Their desire was evident. They wanted it more, and today (Tuesday) they got a well-deserved revenge win.”

The Wolves also won three JV matches: Ivy Luvera/Ana Luvera, 8-4; Micky LeVine/Bree Daigneault, 8-5: and Jazmine Franklin/Thorne, 8-3.

In the win over Lakewood, the Wolves “picked up wins from some usually spots in the lineup,” Stange said.

The difference in the match was the Wolves’ ability to pull out two contests with third-set tiebreakers.

Coupeville earned the first team point as Bailey and Martin rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win in first doubles.

Aparicio and Thorne (6-3, 6-0) and Hanigan (6-4, 6-4) then lost, giving the Cougars (0-8, 0-8) a 2-1 lead, forcing Coupeville to win the next two matches to take the team win.

Daigneault made her varsity debut, teaming with Autio in third doubles. The duo dropped the first set 6-4, then Daigneault “settle down,” Stange said, and Autio “exerted her will.” That led to 6-3, 10-5 wins.

Now with the team score tied at 2, the match swung on Ginnings in second singles.

Ginnings lost the first set 6-4 and trailed 5-2 in the second before taking five straight games for a 7-5 win.

Coming off an illness, Ginnings was exhausted, according to Stange, but pushed the third set to a 17-point tiebreaker, winning 10-7.

JV winners for Coupeville were LeVine/Trujillo (8-0), Franklin/Haleigh Deasy (8-3) and Maureen Rice/Hanigan (8-2).

Coupeville (3-4, 5-7) closes out the regular season at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at Archbishop Murphy (5-2, 5-2).
