Wolves lose game, O’Keefe to University Prep

The Coupeville boys basketball team lost 57-25 at University Prep in Seattle Tuesday, Dec. 4, but the mark in the loss column wasn't the only setback. The Wolves' floor leader and strongest all-around player Gavin O'Keefe broke his foot and is out for the year, a heavy blow to a young team trying to build a winning identify.

The Coupeville boys basketball team lost 57-25 at University Prep in Seattle Tuesday, Dec. 4, but the mark in the loss column wasn’t the only setback.The Wolves’ floor leader and strongest all-around player Gavin O’Keefe broke his foot and is out for the year, a heavy blow to a young team trying to build a winning identify.Coupeville got off to a sturdy start against University Prep as the two clubs were tied 10-10 after the first quarter.At the end of the quarter, however, O’Keefe was undercut on a shot and sustained his injury.Coach Anthony Smith said, “Once Gavin went out we became undisciplined.”Smith said the Wolves “couldn’t score and couldn’t stop them” and were crippled by turnovers in the second quarter as the Puma outscored Coupeville 22-5 to pull away.The Wolves managed only two points in the third quarter and trailed 41-17 after three periods.In all, it was a tough night from the field, Smith said, as the Wolves connected on only eight shots.Smith said University Prep “executed very well” on offense, adding “I can’t image any other team will execute any better.”With the loss of O’Keefe, Smith said it will be time to “go back to day one and start building the program for now and the future.”Coupeville goes to La Conner for a nonleague double header Thursday, Dec. 6, with the varsity girls playing at 6 p.m. the boys at 7:30. The Wolves begin conference play Friday as the girls go to Cedarcrest and the boys host the Red Wolves at 7 p.m.
